Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders are complex illnesses. Nutrition counseling is a key component of the treatment team. Eating disorders are never “just about the food” but developing a healthier relationship with food. This changed relationship is key for a lasting and full recovery. Outpatient eating disorder treatment allows clients (and possibly their families) to address their eating disorder while living their life as normally as possible.

Treating Eating Disorders

An eating disorder treatment team may consist of a psychologist or therapist, a primary care physician, a psychiatrist (if medication is recommended) and a dietitian/nutritionist (like me!).  I believe strong interdisciplinary communication can be extremely helpful for a client’s recovery. Consultation with your team members will be done as often as needed.

I work with almost all eating disorder diagnoses including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and ARFID (Avoidant, Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). For both adults and older teens, I offer individual nutrition counseling sessions. For younger teens, I offer a blend of individual and family-based sessions.

Are you coming from a higher level of care? No worries. I have worked with clients from many programs in the area and am able to provide a smooth transition of care from another care provider. Are you already on a meal plan? Not a problem- we can continue working with a meal plan you feel is helping you in your recovery.

Frequency of Visits: As you might expect, eating disorder severity can vary greatly and may require a wide range of frequency of visits. Some clients (especially in the beginning of their recovery) may need or want to meet weekly for increased support. Others may be farther along in the recovery journey and opt for less frequent check-ins. I like to discuss this periodically with clients to assess support needs.
