Holiday Party Eating

Holiday parties are already stressful for an introvert like myself but when they are scheduled during dinnertime (5-8pm), I can’t help but wonder, is no one else eating dinner? Hors d’oeuvres are great! But I’m not usually going to make a meal out of them.

When the party lists light hors d’oeuvres, you can bet I’m going to eat before going to the party. This way, I’m not getting overly hungry at the party finishing off an entire platter myself or treading that “hangry” line.

And if the hors d’oeuvres at the party aren’t great, you bet I’m eating again when I get home!

I LOVE potlucks. But I’m not going to lie. I tend to want to eat mostly the savory, comfort-food dishes and don’t really care much for the rest. I mean- who goes to a party to eat the veggies?

The problem ends up being that after a couple hours of only having starches/grains, my stomach is either really not happy with me or hungry again!

Instead, my game plan for this style of party is to “gently” remind myself that getting a scoop or two of some veggies and protein to balance out my plate is not going to kill me and will likely keep me full, longer.

This one is a tough one. I’m not saying I need to have all the details of the food before I go to a party, but if I’m going to be at someone’s house for longer than 3 hours, I need some details on the food situation.

Luckily, most people include this information on the invite but every once in a while, someone doesn’t. Here’s how I handle this situation.
